Search Engine Optimisation, commonly known as SEO, is the process of improving a website so that it appears higher in search engine results when people search for information online.

When someone uses a search engine such as Google, they type a query or question into the search bar. The search engine then analyses billions of web pages and displays the most relevant results. These results appear on what is known as the Search Engine Results Page, or SERP.

The goal of SEO is to help a website appear among these results, ideally on the first page. Websites that appear higher in the rankings receive significantly more visitors because most users click only the top few results.

SEO focuses on making a website easier for search engines to understand. Search engines use complex algorithms to analyse content, evaluate website quality, and determine which pages should appear in search results. SEO techniques align a website with these ranking factors.

There are several important components that influence SEO.

First, the content on a website must be relevant and useful for users. Search engines prioritise pages that provide helpful information and clearly answer user queries.

Second, the structure of a website must be organised so that search engines can easily analyse it. This includes proper headings, page titles, URLs, and internal links.

Third, websites must build trust and credibility. Search engines consider signals such as backlinks from other websites to determine whether a site is authoritative.

SEO is different from paid advertising. In paid advertising, website owners pay search engines to display their pages as advertisements. In SEO, websites earn visibility by improving their content and optimisation.

Because of this, SEO is often referred to as organic search marketing. The traffic generated through SEO is called organic traffic, meaning visitors arrive naturally through search results rather than through paid promotions.

SEO is widely used by blogs, businesses, e-commerce websites, and content creators. Any website that wants to attract visitors from search engines can benefit from SEO.

Understanding SEO is important because search engines are one of the largest sources of website traffic on the internet. A well-optimised website can continue attracting visitors for months or even years after content is published.

For this reason, SEO is considered one of the most valuable digital marketing skills today.
